COLORSTEEL vs COLORCOTE

A practical explanation of pre-painted metal roofing product ranges, coating systems and roofing profiles.

COLORSTEEL vs COLORCOTE.

COLORSTEEL and COLORCOTE are competing New Zealand pre-painted metal roofing and cladding product ranges. They are not roof profiles. The profile is the shape the rollformer makes from the metal, such as corrugate, trapezoidal, tray or another roofing profile.

In simple terms, the coating system is the material specification. The profile is the formed shape. A project might use a COLORSTEEL or COLORCOTE product formed into a specific roofing profile.

COLORSTEEL products

COLORSTEEL MAXAM is the current next-generation COLORSTEEL product for most New Zealand environments, using an aluminium, zinc and magnesium alloy coating with a paint system over the steel substrate. COLORSTEEL notes that MAXAM has replaced the older Endura and Maxx ranges. COLORSTEEL ALTIMATE is the option to consider for extremely severe or aggressive environments where MAXAM may not be the right fit.

COLORCOTE products

ColorCote currently presents a three-tier product range: ZinaCore for moderate climatic conditions, MagnaFlow for more demanding environments including coastal exposure, and AlumiGard for very severe marine, industrial or geothermal environments. FleeceCote is also available for selected commercial or non-residential roof builds where condensation management is part of the roof build-up.

What about ZR8 and ZRX?

Older product names can still appear in quotes, conversations or past documentation. For current product selection, it is better to check the latest manufacturer literature and warranty guidance for the specific site. If a quote names an older or unfamiliar product, ask what the current equivalent is and what warranty applies to the property location.

What matters when choosing?

  • The building environment, especially coastal, industrial or geothermal exposure
  • The roofing or cladding profile being formed
  • Colour, gloss level and maintenance expectations
  • Compatibility with flashings, fixings, penetrations and adjacent materials
  • The written product warranty available for the specific address
